If there is one dinner that most Marrakesh weekends will talk about after the fact, it is Comptoir Darna. Two floors, candlelit, velvet-heavy, a menu that is confident without being precious, a live band that begins around 10:30 and builds until the belly dancers move through the tables at 11. It is not subtle. Comptoir does not pretend to be subtle. It is a production, and if that is what Saturday night wants, there is nothing better in this city.

It sits in Hivernage, a villa behind a hedge on Avenue Echouhada, and the room runs the Franco-Moroccan double register the city itself runs — pastilla and a côte de boeuf on the same table, a wine list that takes Meknès seriously. Downstairs is dinner; the rail of the floor above is where the room watches itself. Ask for the ground floor near the stair: the show works the middle of the room, and a table on the rail sees everything and feels nothing. By half past eleven the trays of candles are moving at shoulder height between the tables, and the line between restaurant and cabaret has fully dissolved.

When to go

Book 22:00 on Saturday, three days out minimum. Arrive hungry — portions are generous. The show starts while you’re on mains; you will watch it. If your group wants to go on to Theatro afterwards, ask for the check at 00:15.

The moment

The moment the dancers circle the groom’s chair and the crew rises and somebody buys everyone a round and the band is loud and someone makes a toast that does not land because nobody can hear it but it lands anyway because everyone understands — that is why the bachelor weekend exists. Comptoir provides that room.
